How do I find the entrance to the bar?

The bar is located inside The MacSmiths Mac repair shop at 489 Hackney Road. Just find the black shop withthe window decals, walk through the door and ring the doorbell at the top of the steps. We'll be with you to get you seated shortly.

What are the peak times, and do I need a reservation?

Weeknights tend to be quite relaxed at The Natural Philosopher so feel free to walk-in if you have a small party. For tables of 6-10 we would ask that you book so we can be sure we can accommodate you.

Weekends can get very busy so we always advise to book for weekends. We tend to fill up with guests after they've enjoyed dinner nearby at around 9pm.

Will I have to queue to get drinks?

Hell no! We're a table service cocktail bar. Relax and let us take care of you!

Is the bar dog-friendly?

As long as the dog is friendly, then we're more than happy to accommodate furry friends. There will be a water bowl especially for them. And we always have treats on hand!

What's your policy in regards to under 18's?

Unfortunately, as we're a drinks led venue, our license does not allow under 18's on the premises.

Is the venue wheelchair accessible?

Yes, and no. Our repair shop section is accessible with an accessible bathroom on the same level. Unfortunately, the main bar area is located down some steps. But don't worry, you can enjoy the same friendly and welcoming atmosphere in the repair shop AND we're a table service bar so we will come to you!

What kind of food do you serve?

Whilst we don't have a kitchen here at The Natural Philosopher, we have a small snack list of Chilli Mix, Truffle & Pecorino Mixed Nuts, and Nocellara Olives. But we also partner with the delicious Yard Sale Pizza who will deliver great pizza to the bar minus the delivery fee with our special code. Just scan the QR code on the provided menus, and be sure to enter the listed discount code at checkout.

Are there any dress code requirements?

At The Natural Philosopher we do not believe in dress codes. We believe everyone should be comfortable in what they wear and in their experience of our bar.

Can I book the bar for private events?

Absolutely! Private hire starts from a minimum of 30 guests, up to a maximum of 60 guests. You can find more information in the Private Hire section of the website.

Does the bar have DJ's?

As a small table-service cocktail bar we don't have the room or set up for DJ's but our playlists range from alternative indie and electronic music, to more lively nu-disco and funk. You'll love the vibe and atmosphere, especially because you'll be able to hold a conversation without having to shout.

What makes your cocktails unique?

We have a monthly changing menu of cocktails created using ingredients foraged by ourselves from around East London, and foraged ingredients sourced from our network of foragers around the UK. Our signature drinks are split into 3 sections: Light & fresh, Balanced & Flavourful, and Strong & Complex. So there's something for everyone!

Are there any non-alcoholic options available?

There are always 4 non-alcoholic cocktail options available on our menu, as well as a range of soft drinks.

How does the bar work with the Mac repair shop regarding opening hours?

The Mac repair shop is a business entirely separate from our own. They operate Monday to Friday 9am-5.30pm. We open after they close and on weekends we open a little earlier for afternoon drinks.
